Advice from the Old Dead

January 18

In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius wrote that “even if you lived 3,000 more years, or ten times that, remember: you cannot lose another life than the one you’re living now, or live another one than the one you’re losing.”

Marcus Aurelius died in 180 CE. And while no one has checked on the inside of his tomb recently, it seems he did not, in fact, live another 3,000 years.

But he put himself to his work, wrote beautifully in his journal to no one but himself, and more than halfway through the 3,000 years he didn’t live, we’re still talking about him.

If one life is what we have to live, then the shortest life is also the longest.

What will we do with the time we’re given?

Thank you—let’s have a great day.
