April 29 | Adult of the Year
There is, at least to our collective knowledge, no award for being adult of the year.
No category for doing the most laundry. No speeches for best-in-class budgeting. No nominations for bedtimes, bathroom cleanings, or remembering to put out the recycling.
If you did have the excuse to dust off your tuxedo, find your fanciest shoes, and make your way await the awards—would you wait for the invitation in the mail? Would it change how early you set your alarm? Would you tune in the night of the event, keeping up with the Jones’s also nominated?
We may be masters of our own domain, but no one bothers to come along and let us know.
There are still rewards: living in a clean home. Your partner’s gratitude. The internal sense of self-sufficiency, knowing that you have made enough margin in your life for yourself, for the unexpected, and possibly even a little left over to help out others.
But it comes with no trophy. No recognition.
