closest thing to understanding

Morning Reading for April 20

Imagine memory was perfect—no more gaps, no more fuzzy details, no more making things up at the margins. Imagine all those memories could be played back linearly, and someone was foolish enough to take you up on the offer, spending the next 30 or so years of their life precisely living your exact experiences—

The little league games, the proms, the failed classes, the low moments, the first kisses, getting fired, that long drunken episode trying to help a friend change a tire—

They could experience it all and still not understand you. Still not know things the way you know things.

Because they’re still them and you’re still you, and you experience the world in a way only you can.

Will you help us understand?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
