the back roads of your better being

Morning Reading for April 28

You can always slow things down.

Take a breathe and push the real world to the outer edges of the room, making space in the center of your mind.

There’s the big obvious virtues, the ones you think about, and with good reason. The moral stands, the personal codes, the things you stand by.

Then there’s the little moments. The part of you that kneels down to make sure the kid who fell is alright. The part of you that lets someone cut you off in traffic—even if they don’t realize it was your grace, not their skill. The part of you that still slips the panhandler a couple bucks, even though your rational mind knows its probably not doing much good in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, we live our lives on the highway, because we’ve got places to be. But don’t forget to slow down every now and then—put yourself on a two lane street with a lower speed limit, the back roads of your better being, because what’s the point of going somewhere if you’re not going to enjoy it every now and then?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
