April’s Fools

April 1

If April fools us, April fools us all.

Wasn’t it just March? Didn’t we just have the snow? Weren’t we just commenting on the cold weather, the warm January, the New Year?

The rough part of time is that we never really get a hang of it—like gangling teenagers who grow too quickly, every time we think we have it adjusted, the pace moves or changes.

Are we not masters of a moment already passing, experts on the precise way we needed to live our lives yesterday? Isn’t it time that ultimately leaves us powerless?

Fools we are always—but now it is April, which makes us April’s fools.
