When you encounter something everyone loves—a book, a restaurant, a destination, a person—and find that you don’t like it, you have two options.
You could dig into all the reasons why it’s not all it’s cracked up to be—why a certain dish is poorly prepared, or a certain album has a horrible mix, or the inconsistencies and downsides of an experience that just don’t line up for you. In other words, doing everything to argue someone into disliking something they previously enjoyed.
Or you could shrug your shoulders and say “it’s not for me”. Clearly it’s the right thing for someone else.
And objectively, why would you want it any other way? Isn’t missing out on some great experiences just the cost of being an individual with individual taste?
Could you welcome the thing you dislike with gratitude—a reinforcement, in a roundabout way, of your taste. Proof you really do love the things you really do love.… Read the rest
