It could be the words of a friend, unexpectedly harsh, popping your balloon and bringing you just a few feet closer to the earth. 

It could be the unexpected call from the doctor, the lab results, the routine checkup gone wrong, or just the moment you finally get the bill for it all.

It might even be a quiet moment of addition, the realization of time, that so much of it has passed through your fingers and, despite your best efforts, you haven’t managed to save a drop. 

Reality checks come in all shapes and sizes. You could hold onto it—frame it, put it on the wall, keep it in your wallet, obsess over it, until you’re so sick in the stomach, you’ve earned another reality check.
