love letters to difficulty

Morning Reading for August 1

If we could find an impossible perspective—as if someone could throw our lives into a zip file and compress them into one single, understandable thing—how would it read?

If we could make it through the ups and the downs, turn our limited strength and limited attention to things worthy of them, and carve a little space in the world for ourself, whether by long, slow repetition, like water, or overnight, like dynamite?

If we could do it all without letting it go to our heads. The ups, the downs, the oh-so-many sidewayses, all fighting to get us to think too highly or too little of ourselves and others, slipping little jaded, bitter notes into our jacket pockets—

Well, if we managed to do all of that, one might think of their life as a love letter to difficulty—a note of affection for the people and circumstances otherwise hard to love.

But worth it anyway.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
