how the work feels

Morning Reading for August 2

When the wind is at your back—and no wrong can be done, the words fly from your hands, the pitch deck almost makes itself, any and every creative blessing seems as if it was touched by the muse—well, it’s easy to keep working.

But when it feels like each and every syllable of even a text message has to be hauled out of your soul with an F350 and a winch, dragged out like a bad tooth, blood and sweat giving birth to less than half of the normal creative haul—

Well, it’s a lot harder to keep working then.

There’s a good thought, if obvious, which is that this is when you earn it. Everyone works when the work is easy. The pro separates themselves by showing up no matter what.

There’s an additional thought, though. Which is that everyone creates when creating feels good. And if the emotions of the work contribute at least a little bit to the work, then you may find that the work you make when you don’t want to make work is a lot more interesting precisely because it hasn’t really been done before.

Either way, hard hats on.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
