bad carpenters

Morning Reading for August 11

The saying goes—a bad carpenter complains about their hammer. Their saw. The hours and the pay and proximity of the nearest decent cup of coffee.

A bad writer complains about their keyboard. About their audience metrics and social media and how people’s attention spans just aren’t what they used to be.

Paradoxically, a great writer also complains about tools, just not their own. They can spin a great story about all the bad hammers carpenters are putting up with.

Maybe the saying isn’t quite right—because who doesn’t love complaining about their tools? Maybe it’s something more like this:

A good carpenter complains about their tools, then does the job well anyway.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
