emotional palette

Morning Reading for August 16

If emotion is a range—

Some obviously more related than others: joy and happiness related by their positivity, anger and excitement related by their intensity—

Then we might think of all of the emotions as a sort of palette of possible experience. The reds of anger, the blues of the sublime, the deep black of sadness, the light yellow of optimism.

If these are the colors of our lives, who are we to limit them? To only allow paintings of green and blue and yellow but avoid anything remotely resembling gray?

Or to tell the artist we only believe in pastels—all the colors, yes, but only in the lightest touches of the brushstroke, avoiding any kind of intensity?

Does any artist want their palette limited? Then why would you limit yourself?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
