Cannon Event

November 4

In the early days of the civil war, confederates held a key position near the capitol called Munson Hill, a tiny stockade with one cannon.

After months of scheming how to take it over, Union soldiers discovered it abandoned, the only cannon a painted log.

Everyone stopped to laugh—make fun of McLellan, shaking in his boots over one log, painted black, incapable of thundering, a great joke at his expense.

No one stopped to ask the log how it felt—whether it dreamed of floating down a river, where it grew up, what kind of redwoods it looked up to, what it was like to be felled and, stripping back its bark, take on a great deal of paint, to first be a threat and then a great joke.

All questions that still remain unanswered and, until now, unasked.
