Courage

July 4

You can take it but cannot steal it. You should know—human history is full of leaders who have tried.

You can inspire it or be inspired by it but you cannot manage it. The second you try it’’ll disappear, possibly for good.

You can hold it but cannot buy or sell it for a second. Your money would be better spent elsewhere. And those who claim to pedal it find themselves bankrupt soon.

You can even, if you like, tell yourself that it’s no longer necessary, the work of someone else, a relic of a past age. Someone else’s responsibility.

But you cannot stamp it out entirely—cannot stop it from singing in your heart when you see it in others. Cannot stop the breath that breathes its name, even if only because you want to want it…

Courage.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
