“We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life” - Gift from the Sea, Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Consider a man, a little deranged in the head, who believes the moon is fake and gravity isn’t real and cannot for the life of him understand how the tide works.
We’ll call him Steve.
Steve wakes up early, not to work out, read, or reflect, but to run down to the beach to see if it’s happening.
Many days, he walks back to his home wailing, dejected, wondering what he did wrong, crying out for the future and wondering what will happen to the children if the ocean leaves him.
Other days, he runs into the village, crying aloud his success, yelling for all to hear that the ocean has returned to him, here to remain forever.
We all know Steve doesn’t have it quite right. And given the opportunity, we would probably sit down and explain to him that the tides are not only normal, but predictable. The ocean commutes every day, leaving and returning, rising and falling, growing and declining, never permanent but always in place.
Steve would not listen, only weep.
Yet are we so different when we consider our own state of being? Our own creativity, intellect, will, and self discipline?
Do we really place such little faith in the ebb and flow of life?
