Every Thought a Revolution

May 5

“Every revolution was first a thought in one man’s mind” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, History

Before the words you read existed in this order, they began as something else—an idea of an idea, lost in a corner behind a pile of nouns and verbs, hidden behind memories and moments and other detritus of the human mind.

Some thoughts pass like whisps of cloud, angling across the sky in the shape of a dog, or a car, or a bird with a very strange hat. Others storm onto the horizon impossibly fast, rattling your windows and rending the heavens with the crackling flash of inspiration.

Of course, the storm, like every storm, eventually passes. And in the wake, we often forget, ideas that once held all of our attention lapsing into a shadow of a memory.

And as we pass back into the physical world, surrounded by permanence, buildings and ideas and political parties and philosophies, we forget that each and every one of the things around us hold their root in an idea—fleeting or thundering.

Perpetual reminders of the power we hold between our ears, always ready, always eager to reshape the world.
