The Falling Knife

September 27

The saying goes, a falling knife has no handle.

Now consider:

Nothing changes about the knife when it slips from the hand, is knocked from the countertop, goes skittering across the glass table and off the edge, falling at the precise rate of Newton’s apple.

No magical force shows up and, leaving the blade, removes the safe parts of the tool. No temporal warp makes the right side of the knife disappear. And there is no 4th law of physics that someway, somehow causes the handle to disappear.

No, “a falling knife has no handle” is nothing but a story. A story that, in a world of knives, happens to be incredibly useful.

A story originally told by someone just like us—minus a few fingers.
