Your Father’s Business

May 10

Your day did not begin empty.

It started, whenever it did, with demands. Demands on time and energy and money that came from other places and people. Jobs, relationships, work, hobbies, each comes forward demanding it’s pound of your hours, your attention, your life in this world.

Of course, these were all your choices—at least somewhat. The product of the events that led you to this moment, some within your control, others not. In a roundabout sense, some part of your day was spoken for by yourself from the past.

If time is truly what limits us—what we truly have—then the question becomes what will your time bring you today? What business has your past self set you about that you must continue?

Like Jesus, when pressed for answers about his intentions, telling people he was “about his father’s business”, maybe meaning carpentry, maybe meaning something else?

Something that was entirely known to him? Speaking up, from the past, a commitment and belief owning the hours of the day?

Important business to be about.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
