against resilience

Morning Reading for February 1

If the past—both collectively, all of us, and personally, our individual stories—is to teach us anything, it’s that very few things are accomplished without some level of resilience.

But take a look around: can you say there’s anyone tougher than an addict? Anyone who puts up with more than someone in an abusive relationship?

Resilience can keep you moving towards a goal, casting off the things in between you and something good, something right. But it can also be the voice in the back of your head telling you to tough it out when you should have pulled the eject handle years ago.

Maybe the strength of virtue isn’t just its presence, but what we turn it towards? What are the things in your life worth being resilient for?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
