You can take a swing at your inmost being. 

Choose a course of action that commits great violence against the self.

But we’ve yet to find the story in history or solution in science that could break that innermost identity, destroy it, or even separate one tiny piece for one moment. 

If the soul—whatever it is—is the truest expression of who you are, then who you are is one tough bastard.
