Forget

May 19

You always forget something while camping.

Look, it would be nice if that wasn’t the rule. It would certainly keep plenty more boots dry and stomachs full and cut down the number of near murders over forgotten tent poles.

No matter how many times you check the list, no matter how things you repack, no matter how many times you go out, you always find yourself on the road without a knife or a pot or a hat or a sleeping bag pad.

Camping would be much easier if you never forgot anything. Far more convenient. You could relax, knowing you’d never have to scramble to improvise some kind of fix or double back your steps to pick up something critical.

Then again, if you never forget something, well, it wouldn’t really be camping.

Doesn’t a lot of the fun in life exist because of the gap between what we intend and what actually happens?

The little spark of chaos that keeps us on our toes? Gives us something to prove ourselves against?
