Virgil is wrote the words “Et in Arcadia ego” —a Latin phrase that roughly translates “even in Arcadia I”.
This is interesting for several reasons.
The first is that Virgil would probably be made fun of today for writing in Latin. It’s a certified homeschooled move.
The second is that we don’t really have a common knowledge of what or where Arcadia is. Much less who, why, or when.
The third lingers a bit—the disconnected I, an unknown voice. Who is there, not just in Arcadia, but even in Arcadia?
The voice of a poet—describing the life so simple and beautiful it’s almost pulled directly from one of his books, the simple rustic life, without farce or complication. Arcadia. Eutopia without pretense.
Even there—even there death raises its head, never forcing the issue, but always reminding, like a leaky faucet in the back of your head—moving slowly through good and bad, whether we acknowledge it or not, the always-impending dread, even here, even here, even here…
