Demoting the Inner Critic

August 24

To your past self: the gift of having an inner critic, the mean voice in your head you created to protect yourself. Your inner critic makes sure no one can undercut you, no one can surprise you, no one can say anything worse to you than you say to yourself.

To your future self: the gift of having an inner critic is the gift of always having more to learn—a singular, dogged part of yourself who refuses to settle for anything less than what was previously impossible. You need look no further than your own head to find new mountains to climb.

To your inner critic: we give you the gift of demotion. We no longer need you to keep us safe—and invite you instead to one singular seat at a table or friends, where your voice can be heard as an equal, not a tyrant.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
