Unhappy New Year

Morning Reading for January 1

A brief course through history should tell you not every New Year is happy.

Not just the history books: your own memories. You don’t have to go back too many years to tip the scales away from optimism, some better than others, some dramatically worse.

But those aren’t New Years anymore. They’re old. Signed, sealed, and kicked onto the corner of the universe’s porch, delivered to never be opened again, void of any ability to change and grow.

Each New Year is charged with the potential to be anything. Happy, unhappy, another year of desolation, or a rerun of an old favorite—the choice of how you think of it is up to you.

So happy New Year.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
