July 14 | The Heart

It is certain, by definition, that there is evil in the heart of evil people. That the murderer in the streets was a first a murderer in the mind, a thousand times over, thoughts and feelings pulsating and filling a thousand negative places.

Of course, that can only be assumed—for each of us has the luxury and torment of only knowing our own hearts and minds, and only knowing those partially. Regrettably and wonderfully stuck being only ourselves forever. 

In the late 19th century Joseph de Maistre wrote, “I do not know what the heart of a rascal may be; I know what is in the heart of an honest man; it is horrible.”

Sure, he’s a pretentious ass who used too many semi colons.
