welcome to America

Morning Reading for July 4

If none of us own this land—

(and who could own her? Still strong, still fierce, still sending her middle finger hurtling through the window at gusts of 70 mph, tossing her hair back and taking your house with it, sweeping the front porch of towns and roads when she’s angry?)

Then all of us our strangers, foreigners in the land. The beneficiaries of a place that does not belong to us.

In that regard, we owe each other a debt. The kind that in the old days came with a threat, where Zeus himself would come knocking if we didn’t play according to the rules.

We are here as guests. We are far from whatever our home is. And we must think of our fellow journeyers as our responsibility. Because how can one foreigner turn to the other and say they’re not welcome here?

We’ve got to take care of this place we live, and we must take care of each other eachother.

Welcome to America.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
