the right and the left

Morning Reading for July 9

The saying goes, do not let your right hand know what your left is doing.

But hands don’t really know things. They do things, sure. Great things. Big things. Small things and loving things and angry things and normal things. They hit keyboards and carry grocery bags and gesticulate wildly as you tell a story about swim lessons in the 6th grade.

Hands built the building you’re sitting in. Hands wrote the email you’re reading. Hands went to space and explored the moon and fought in Normandy and Vietnam.

But even the best hands of the brightest people still don’t know anything. Because they’re hands. Hands that do. And you have a brain, a brain that knows.

So maybe the question isn’t really about knowing, it’s about doing:

What should your right hand do? What should your left? To what will you turn your knowing brain?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
