life's raisins

Morning Reading for July 20

One of life’s lessons comes from trail mix—once known affectionately as GORP, good old raisins and peanuts, named so by a generation that had yet to discover M&Ms.

The lesson goes something like this: the more you pluck the good parts out of the trail mix, the less enjoyable the mix is, and frankly, the more likely you are to make enemies with anyone unfortunate enough to be sharing a snack with you.

The more you pick out the good parts, the more intense the bad parts become, until you’ve gotten to the point where you don’t even want to consider eating it any more.

On the other hand, take it by the handful, and you’ll find the whole thing isn’t just tolerable, it’s enjoyable.

It’s a lot easier to stomach life’s raisins if you don’t leave them until there’s no chocolate left.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
