Leaves

October 1

The leaves leave the world a better place, falling where they will, staring up in bunches towards an umber sky.

Humans may uniquely fear dying alone, for each leaf finds the company of several thousand of their closest friends, laying flat or piling up, an annual funeral of color.

Could it be that as they fade into the topsoil—readying the earth for new life—they find half-closed leaf-eyes staring towards the changing season, and muster the closest thing a leaf can bring towards a smile as they see a single new bud appear on the branches above—proof that it will all happen again?

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
