Live by the scoreboard,

Live by the scoreboard,

Hello friend—you’re receiving this email as a part of morning reading, a daily reflection on the parts of life worth living for that you signed up for sometime last year. I've got a laundry list of additions, designs updates, and website pieces I want to make, but ultimately, I just wanted to bring this back. Thank you for reading, and a very happy New Year.

Live by the Scoreboard, Die by the ScoreboardJanuary 10th

Good morning, friend,There’s nothing easier in life than living by the scoreboard. It’s very objective. Nice, big round letters that tell us exactly where we stand. Exactly what’s going on. Without any of the pesky business of subjectivity. Salaries. Weight. Followers or subscriber count. GPA. Horsepower. There’s no wiggle room in basic mathematics, no opportunity to plead your case with the man upstairs. After all, life is all so fluffy and unknown, there’s nothing wrong with craving some simple and objective. But that’s also the double edge of the scoreboard—it’s simplicity. Reducing a whole series of complicated variables to their very, very simple result. It’s great when you want to measure the specific result of something, but in and of itself, it offers no advice. No ways forward. No routes or opportunities. Just big, bold, blocky letters, standing impervious to any other factors. That’s the thing: we usually come after the scoreboard on the grounds of vanity. You shouldn’t care so much about your follower count, your salary, etc. Which is true. But it’s not even the worst part: the world we live in requires action and the scoreboard can only measure the result of action—it cannot suggest action, or even measure action—only the result. It’s like measuring the horsepower of the cart (without ever bothering to attach a horse to it in the first place). Today, you’re faced with the task of an endless series of choices. Each requires your focus. Your energy. Your talent and experience and disposition. If your only way of measuring the success of those choices is the scoreboard, well, here’s to hoping it works out in your favor. But if you find yourself tired of looking up to find out where you stand, to see what your actions resulted in, or if you have the wisdom to never look up in the first place, there’s another way.Do everything you can to make what you believe to be the right choice,Take a deep breath,And let the results go. And then do it again. Journal Prompt: What's the most difficult decision you've made in the last week?
