When the Man Comes Around
April 18
They say “the only constants in life are death and taxes” but really, only one of those things feels like a constant.
None of us know the day we’re going to die. We live much of our lives rightfully avoiding our own demise, finding ways—practical and superstitious—to avoid bringing on our end too quickly.
Of course, tax day is written into our calendars in perpetuity. Circled and marked for every April 18th stretching into the future until such a time as either we or the US Government embraces the first of the two constants—death.
In a roundabout way, that makes today the closest thing to judgment any of us can reliably predict. Sure, the heavens might not open, and the IRS has yet to announce the sounding trumpets or the breaking of seals, but every 4th month of the year, the man comes around.
And if this is it, well, is this so bad? Should we live our years in fear of April 18th?
Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
