March 29 | Waiting For the Universe

In some domains of our lives, we’re waiting for the universe to tell us yes. Waiting for some wizened old man or message in the sky to come along and say, “start writing your book” or “it’s time to release music” or “you really should write down that business plan.”

Other times, we’re waiting for the universe to tell us no. Waiting for something bad enough to happen to motivate us to go to the doctor or get our budget together or start eating cleaner. Like we’re all just sitting around waiting for god to blow the damn trumpet and kick our ass for not scheduling a cleaning with the dentist. 

The obvious move would be to flip the paradigm the opposite direction. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to work for anyone.

The less-obvious-but-still-obvious observation would be to apply some empathy to it. Other people feel bad about what they do, so you don’t have to make them feel worse when their personal doomsday finally comes around. And it might be worth telling your friends they should go for their ideas more. 

The problem is that both of those approaches involve making things into big deals. Really big deals. Astronomically big deals. The biggest possible deals.
