saying goodbye to should

Morning Reading for March 25

There are some things you wish you did, some things you think you could be, some things you might consider trying, some words you might say.

But as soon as you bring “should” the party changes—because “should” never shows up without his best friends shame and guilt.

You might immediately say, well, I shouldn’t have invited them. And that would be missing the point. You could say, knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn’t have used the word should. And that would be a better start.

“Should” and “shouldn’t” imply a level of failure—failure that may exist in some cases, but all too often, we use the word “should” like a 2x4 to smack our past selves upside the head.

A past self who almost always is trying their best, and deserves better treatment than “should” has to offer.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
