No More, Mr. Nice Guy
April 15
Mr. Nice Guy.
Haven’t we all had enough of him?
We hear his words coming out of our mouths when it’s not quite what we mean. Or often, precisely the opposite of what we mean. We say it’s fine, it’s no big deal, it didn’t cost us, or it doesn’t matter, and we know each lie is a thousand times worse than the last, straight from Mr. Nice Guy himself.
He’s the ultimate of all freeloaders. Always highjacking not just our words but our thoughts and actions, spewing his sickly-sweet bullshit. Mr. Nice Guy is forever signing us up to help, then won’t show himself, leaving us to half ass it through some project we wanted nothing to do with in the first place.
The worst part is, he’s really not nice—not in the slightest. We hate him almost as much as we hate the people he makes us help, and we hate them almost as much as we hate ourselves for doing it.
It is a loving and mature act to say, no more to Mr. Nice Guy. To find the courage, humility, and maturity to tell the truth when people ask us if we are willing to help, if we can stick around a little longer, if they can pick our brain or borrow our truck or tell us about that time that they…
I mean after all, if he was so nice, why does he always insist on being call Mr.?
