object permanence

Morning Reading for August 14

You know what? Babies may actually be onto something.

The way they forget things exist the second they’re out of sight.

No, this isn’t some pot-fueled monologue by a college freshman in philosophy 101. For all we believe about object permanence, the truth is that objects aren’t really permanent. They don’t stick around. They bend and break and warp and change and finally, at the right time, pass on from this existence to another.

Would we perhaps be better off if we let go of our own conceptions and did what we could to see each and everything anew every day?

To not see the knives and pans and tupperware and plates of the kitchen as permanent, but notice how they change a little, nicks and scratches and warps coming in like gray hairs, objects that are loved, yes, but not permanent. Anything but permanent.

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
