Obvious
April 11
Almost every part of our lives are obvious.
Right shoe on the right food, left shoe on the left foot, drink in the cupholder, drive on the right side of the road, because you’re very obviously not British.
We love the obvious. We treat it like a cult. We build our days around it, rolling our eyes at the poor coworkers who just can’t pick up on something so plain and simple. We call it common sense, like anyone anywhere should be able to pick up a common book of ideas or phrases.
Oh, but we also hate our lives for being obvious. We can’t stand it. We work our asses off making the not-obvious obvious and then the second it’s obvious we’re bored out of our minds.
We look for new and interesting ways—non-obvious ways—to inject the non-obvious into our lives. Hobbies. Restaurants. At-home-murder-mystery-puzzles-box-subscriptions. Anything to save us from what we already expect.
Except there’s probably already a couple of things in your life that refuse to be obvious.
People who still surprise you. Passion projects where you still surprise yourself. Clear-headed moments when you cut through an old, obvious problem at work in a new way.
What part of your ordinary life still sticks up for itself? Still refuses to be obvious?
When was the last time you were grateful for it?
Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
