Achilles' Heel

Morning Reading for October 11

In the grand scheme of metaphors—please remember that in the story, Achilles’ heel is actually his heel. His literal calf. And his figurative inability to see closer than the length of his sword once someone has upset him.

So if you find yourself in the business of heroics, there are at least two worthwhile observations:

First, none of us think less of Achilles for his heel. We’re willing to accept it. Doesn’t mean we want to live it, but we can still see him as a hero, thinking long on his strengths and his flaws.

Second, none of us would have thought any less about Achilles if he’d done some calisthenics, or gone to therapy. You can have your Achilles heel be a part of your story—but how much happier would you be if you just got into stretching instead?

Thank you. Let’s have a great day.
