pull the pin

pull the pin

Hello friend—you’re receiving this email as a part of morning reading, a daily reflection on the parts of life worth living for that you signed up for sometime last year. I've got a laundry list of additions, designs updates, and website pieces I want to make, but ultimately, I just wanted to bring this back. Thank you for reading, and a very happy New Year.

Pull the PinJanuary 25th

Good morning, friend. It could be the pin in your hair, ready to fall out as the day finally transitions from something to be dealt with to something to be enjoyed.Or it could be the pin in the dress, no longer needed as the sewing machine makes permanent what was once temporary. It could be the pin to your debit card, the kind of ordinary yet deeply personal information we barely even know to notice.Or it might be the pin to a hand grenade, the literal last straw between you and a fiery end.But you might be surprised to learn the phrase ‘pulling the pin’ doesn’t come from any of those places—it’s a term from conductors, pulling the pin that connect two train cars together, leaving the car (and every car behind it) off in the distance. There are pins everywhere all around us, and we all know we’re not supposed to pull them. You could yell “fuck this, I quit”, which might have less dramatic effect working from home, but the sentiment stands: you could leave your job literally any moment you want. Including this one.Yes, you still have your bills to pay, and your career to consider, but don’t let that distract you from the fact that you can quit any time you want to.There are pins everywhere you could pull. Relationships. Hobbies. Friendships. Commitments of all types and sizes. You can pull the pin on your diet or your workout or your snap streak or Tuesday night bridge club.Pins, everywhere, all around. Pins that only you can pull. Sometimes it’s quitting early, sometimes it’s quitting at the exact right time. Or even quitting years later than you should have. The power—and the agency of control—is up to you. Journal Prompt: when was the last time you 'pulled the pin'?
