The Spirit of Play

June 16

The fiercest competitor might set their alarm for 4:45am and, ignoring the snooze button, do more than most of us will by 7am. They push the limits of their craft, their mind, their body, lifting weights or watching tape or creating hypothesis after hypothesis.

By the strict logic of competition, you may think the ultimate competitor would seek every advantage against their opponent—but imagine their disappointment to discover the person they face off against has tried anything less than their hardest. Or worse, was somehow hindered from being their best—showed up sick or out of shape.

We may endure long nights, early mornings, or something else entirely—the long yearning for something, something still not defined, something we may pursue every day, every week, every year, still just beyond reach—maybe it’s not the cost of having it, but the cost of earning it? Taking it on at full strength, still here, still standing…

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
