Starting Over

March 21

The thing about starting over is you’re never really starting over.

You can spend your days in universities debating whether or not humans begin life as tabula rasa—a blank slate, free from preexisting notions and ideas. But no one could for one second argue that you are, in your present form, a blank slate.

You bear etches. The deep grooves and scars of time that can only be earned. You can knock the chalk from the blackboard, but the well-worn traces of thousands of attempts remain.

So the next time you’re starting something over, look past the thing you’re starting over—just for a moment. Look past the dream of the future, the ideal end state, the vision of success and the accolades it comes with—and take a moment to appreciate the person who is willing to start over again.

Ready to give it another go, despite all bumps and bruises from all the other times. Willing to pick things up again. No longer naive about everything working out the first time, but still willing to give it a try.

You.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
