The Story of the Moral
September 20
As far as we can tell, not yet being able to decipher or speak the languages of dogs, squirrels, and other animals, humans are the only ones foolish enough to sit around telling stories.
The loudest songbird, the most verbose squirrel, the cricket who will serenade you well into the evening, they’ve all yet to discover the moral of the story they’re telling—yet to make it past single lines of dialogue, yet to find their own once upon a time, yet to worry about subtext and counterpoint and plot and subplot.
They are still awfully beautiful to listen to—without the moment when, with eyes beginning to glaze over, someone tries to explain a broader purpose behind the story they told, some simple lesson or takeaway, while the birds keep on singing, keep on singing, keep on singing…
Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
