Only the Vanquished

September 15

History may be written by the victors, but only once the champagne has stopped flowing, when there’s no more victor-ing to do. Why would they dwell on a time when they were less than victorious?

It’s the vanquished who have all the time on their hands—feeling with each and every sting of defeat the painful memory of what really happened.

You could look at this as an argument against history—a way of trying to read between the lines, past those who control the narratives, to some kind of possible objectivity: what really happened?

Or you could take it the other way, and read it as a wholehearted endorsement of being defeated.

After all, what would we do without history? What would we do without our beautiful losers?

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
