There Will Be a Last Time

September 12

There was a first time for everything: your first step, first paycheck, first kiss, first time filing taxes, sorting through endless spreadsheets wondering “why the hell would anyone build a system so convoluted?”

There will be future firsts: a first house, first retirement, first winning hand of scrabble, whatever new and wonderful things you fill the latter half of your life with.

There are also negative firsts. The first divorce, first death of a loved one, first time you’re fired, the first punch you take—or throw. And negative firsts in your future: any and all of the above, coming round the corner, never hear but never that far off either.

For all these firsts there will be a last. A time when it all ends. A last slow morning, last cup of coffee, last late night with your sides splitting open from laughter, a last time you find yourself saying “I love you” and really meaning it.

Of course, the negative firsts also have their lasts as well—the last pain, the last trouble, maybe in your rear view mirror for decades, never again to take it on, or maybe coming to an end—death, yes, but only one, a first and a last.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
