A Few Words More

July 18

Very little could be said here without words.

No hats to tip, no eyes to bat, no forehead to crease, no slow, understanding nods.

Not even the passing “hmm” or “ahh” could make it past the all-controlling medium.

So we take our vocabularies and tip them out onto the floor like a great bucket of legos, spilling syllables and adjectives in every direction.

The trouble is that it seems using too many words has roughly the same effect as using no words at all. There’s still nothing to understand, even if someone would take the time to pick through the mess of it all.

We’re all stuck with the weight of meaning on our shoulders, trying desperately to fit the world through lens of a few consonants, hoping that, despite all the difficulty, someone will catch some version of what we mean.

Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
