You Against the World
February 23
Good morning, friend.
Life has certain things in store for you today.
It could be a blank calendar or a strong left hook. You could be digging someone else out of one of their mistakes, or digging yourself out of one of yours.
You could have a strong sense of how today is supposed to go, or no idea. Either way, life may or may not have plans that you know nothing of and won’t know until they happen.
When asked about his approach to improvising, Frank Zappa said,
“My theory is this: I have a basic mechanical knowledge of the operating of the instrument and I got an imagination. And when the time comes up in a song to play a solo, it’s me against the laws of nature.”
So make your plans—lay in your to-do list, count the cost of the future, really do it because it’s really valuable.
But when life decides otherwise, and puts you up to the task—small or large—that it has planned, well…
You’ve got a basic mechanical knowledge of your skills.
You’ve got an imagination.
And when the time comes, well, it’s you against the world.
Aren’t you excited to see what you’ll make of it?
Morning Reading is a daily email to help center yourself, reflect, and prepare for the day. It’s sent with love from your friend, Zach in Austin, Texas. He even drew the logo himself.
